12 Ways to Play in the Mud

Mud play is one of those magical childhood experiences offering so many play opportunities, discoveries, & plenty of fun!  Due to the heavy rain we had last night we're planning lots of mud play & exploration today!

Here are 12 of our favourite ways to explore the mud in our outdoor space.

1. Build your own mud castle Hands down, the most favourite activity around here. Who needs sand when you've got mud?! So many learning opportunities are on offer with this activity!

2. Become a sculptor! Create a mud face on a tree or outdoor wall.

3. Help the birds make a nest with mud & sticks. Find out more about how different birds build nests & the variety of items they use to create them.

4. Give yourself a mud high five & make your own mud hand print. What happens when the mud dries?

5. Discover just how sticky & strong mud is by using it to hold things against a wall. What's the heaviest item you can add to the mud without it falling from the wall?

6. Listen to the amazing sounds that mud makes. What does it sound like when you splat it, push your hand into it, pull your hand out, or when you splash in it?

7. Discover just how cool mud is. Wriggle your toes in it, how does it feel? Is wet or dry mud cooler? Discover why so many animals love mud, especially in the summer. Test the temperature of the mud with a thermometer, & compare it to the temperature of soil in the sun.

8. Search for earthworms in the mud. You could add them to a homemade wormery

9. Dig it! Perfect for developing those gross motor moves. Why not dig hole & plant some bubs or veggies. Or your could create a mini cave & use it as a small world play toys.

10. Make 'mud' cakes with it, there are so many recipes you could create. We love to add dandelion petals to the tops of ours.

11. Paint with it. Just add a little water & you can create your own mud pictures on paper, or cave style paintings on nearby walls.

12. Paint yourself with it! Mud was made for body painting! This has to be one of our favourites, what a great way to express yourself & truly explore the natural qualities of mud!
