Owl Cupcakes

To celebrate the end of National Cupcake Week (17th - 23rd September) we thought we'd have a go at creating some owl cupcakes. These cute cupcakes are quick & easy to make & perfect for children to decorate.

Ingredients
Cupcakes (makes 12-14):

8oz Margarine (or soft butter)
8oz Self-raising flour
4 Eggs
8oz Caster Sugar

Topping:
Jar of chocolate spread
Smarties (orange/yellow for beak & blue/green for eyes)
Tube of black writing icing
Orange flavour chocolate buttons (we used buttons by Silver Spoon)
Packet of chocolate covered pretzels

To make our basic cupcakes we mixed the flour, margarine, eggs & sugar together in a large mixing bowl until smooth, then spooned the mixture into cupcake cases, before popping them in the oven (180c) for 15-20mins until golden, & then left to cool.

To create our owls we spread 1 teaspoon of chocolate spread over the top of each (cooled) cupcake, then used a fork to create a feather-like pattern.

For the owls ears we broke a chocolate pretzel in half & added to the top of the cupcake. We used 2 orange buttons for the base of the eyes & added a little icing to each centre before placing the smarties on top. For the beak we added a yellow/orange smartie to the centre of each cake.

To finish our owls we added detail to the eyes using the black icing pen, & then they were ready to fly. Super simple & speedy to make.

These twit-twoo treats are great for children to create, & would make a prefect autumnal / halloween treat.
