Open-ended Activity - Weaving an Outdoor Structure with Ribbons & Sticks

Following Minnie’s interest in weaving & threading we thought we'd have a go at weaving an outdoor sculpture in the garden.

Minnie wanted to make a rocket... here’s how we got on.

Our tools for this activity were recycled ribbons & some thin pliable sticks
Minnie helped to push the sticks into the ground to create a (rather abstract)  'rocket' shape.

Then she started to weave the rainbow ribbons in & out of the sticks

She clearly loved weaving the ribbons around the structure & soon she was inside her 'rocket' dancing around the colourful ribbons.

Soon it was ready for countdown! '5, 4, 3, 2, 1...'
I love how she covered her ears as her rocket blasted off'.

Minnie's rocket whooshed to the moon several times during the morning! She had great fun playing in & around the sculpture with her toys, & made a small rocket for her favourite teddy bear too.

The day before Minnie had been reading 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy so I'm guessing this may have had an influence on her play this morning. ;-)

By the end of the morning the wind had blown most of Minnie's weaving from the wooden frame, but we thought the remaining ribbons looked so pretty blowing in the breeze.

We're looking forward to more of Minnie's creations adorning out little garden soon.
